Modernize Your Living Room

If your muddled living room is a mismatch of styles and you would like to give the room an updated, contemporary vibe, we have your modern makeover solutions. With a few new accent pieces, a little rearranging, and a solid design plan, you can easily modernize your living room to transform it from shabby to chic. By modernizing your living room, you will be creating a clean, unifying space that your family and friends can relax in and enjoy.

Modern style is known for being clean and polished, so one of the first steps to modernizing your living room is to rid the room of excess clutter. The room should have one solid focal point and should be simple and minimalistic. This means that if you have a hodgepodge of pictures of family members celebrating monumental events through the decades scattered throughout the room, you may want to consider streamlining them or removing them altogether. Remember, everything in the room should add to the overall function or contemporary design theme of the room. If it is not beautiful or useful, then remove it.

After clearing your living room of decade-old trinkets and accessories, it’s time to bring new, modern art and décor into the room. Replace old vases filled with artificial flowers with contemporary vases filled with twigs or bamboo. Changing the artwork on your walls is also a fast and inexpensive way to change your room’s overall ambiance. Replace your traditional wall décor with contemporary pieces, like those by Kenneth Wingard. Bold geometric shapes make a powerful statement and are characteristic of modern design.
Next, take a look at your sofa. If it’s unsalvageable and you can afford to buy new furniture, perhaps invest in sleek, leather furniture with chrome or stainless steel accents, like those by Gus Modern or Herman Miller. If it is outdated, yet still in working condition, there are ways to update this existing sofa to help it blend with your fresh modern room. If your sofa is a solid color, replace your old throw pillows with throw pillows with contemporary designs and colors. If you have a sofa with an outdated pattern, try covering it with a neutral sofa cover.
Additional ways to modernize your traditional living room is to try rearranging the furniture, adding a modern rug, or applying a clean coat of paint to the walls. Even if you decide to keep your existing wall color, repainting your room will erase scuff marks and other blemishes due to normal wear and tear.
