Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Valentine’s Day? Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th, is a holiday that originated in ancient Rome to honor Juno, the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. February 15th was the Feast of Lupercalia, so on the eve before the feast, boys would pick a girl’s name out of a jar and the person’s name the boy drew would be his partner throughout the Festival. After the festival, many of the children continued to see each other and often got married.
However, this did not please the Roman Emperor Claudius II. The emperor was having a difficult time recruiting men as soldiers for his army and believed the reason was because the men did not want to leave their sweethearts. His remedy was to cancel all engagements and marriages throughout Rome. Yet, this did not prevent one Roman priest - St. Valentine - from uniting lovers in the sacrament of marriage. Saint Valentine secretly went against the wishes of Emperor Claudius II and married couples, until he was ultimately caught, arrested, and beheaded on February 14, around the year 270. So, when the Christian Church did away with pagan customs, which included the Feast of Lupercalia, the feast was celebrated on February 14th as St. Valentine’s Day.
