It has been a long 9 weeks and 2 days since the Writers Guild of America began their strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. More than 12,000 writers have joined the strike, and countless television celebrities, such as members of the cast of Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, 24, and The Office, have rallied outside California studios to support their writers.A survey of the American public conducted by Pepperdine University on November 8, 2007 found that 4 out of 5 people are aware the writer’s strike is in progress. However, do you know the issues surrounding the strike? The Writers Guild negotiates a new basic contract with the AMPTP every three years, and this time they could not reach an agreement regarding key issues. These issues include DVD residuals, union jurisdiction over animation and reality program writers, and compensation for material written for the Internet and other up-and-coming digital technologies.

The writers strike in 1988 caused an estimated loss of 10% of television viewers. So with reruns and reality shows taking over the tube in 2008, American viewers, again, may be less likely to tune in to their favorite TV series. However, while the television networks are airing lemons, DVD distributors are making lemonade.
DVD sales are expected to escalate as more viewers search for alternative sources of entertainment. Many people are buying TV series DVDs and using this opening to catch up on past seasons they’ve missed. This time is also allowing Americans to wa
tch TV series on DVD that they haven’t seen but have always wanted to. The longer the writers strike continues, the more people will become greedy for fresh content, and more DVDs will be sold in stores. If you’re one of the scores of modern Americans who are grabbing DVDs off the shelf faster than “Tickle Me Elmo” in ’96, you’re going to need a place to store your growing DVD collection. Modern media storage is a practical way to organize your movies, music and games. The Sona DVD Wall Unit in midnight black by contemporary manufacturer Offi has a sleek design that blends perfectly with any modern home décor. The Offi DVD storage unit is large enough to hold up to 185 DVDs – so even if the writers strike continues for some time, you will have a place to organize your ever-growing compilation of DVD TV series and movies.

Wow, high irony if there ever were such a thing. This shift in how the public absorbs television is why the writer's and the AMPTP can reach an agreement in the first place, as residuals from DVD sales are one of the keynotes of the strike. I just can't wait for the strike to end. I'm so sick of reality TV! I've purchased way more DVDs in the past couple of weeks, including tv shows. Definitely ironic. I'll have to check out those dvd storage racks if this continues much longer.
I second that!!!
