Modern Design 101

Whether you just came across the Modern Design blog or are an avid reader, I thought it would be helpful to get a quick lesson in the history of modern design. Today's post is inspired by a weekend trip to NYC, where I came across a modern design studio in SoHo called Design Within Reach. After my visit, I was very excited to learn more information about the company's history and overall mission behind their inspiring studio.

The goal of Design Within Reach is to become the ultimate source for classically designed furniture that has put modern design on the map. Since 2006, the studio has compiled a powerful collection of "fully licensed classics". The studio's website describes a "fully licensed classic" as furniture that is "manufactured by the company holding the license to the original design". A few of these inspiring designs come from the minds of history's most famous modern designers such as Eero Sarrinen, Charles & Ray Eames, and Le Corbusier, to name a few. The most coveted modern home designs can be found in one of Design Within Reach's extraordinary studios throughout the United States and Canada.

The following collection is a mix of my favorites from the Design Within Reach studio. These wonderful pictures highlight the ingenious talent from classic and modern-day designers that have shaped the world of modern design into what it is today.

YES! I love Design Within Reach. I pass by the one in Harvard Square every night on the bus ride home from work. I love looking at the window display! Great post!
